Understanding Equity Trading in 2012: A Market Structure Boot Camp for IROs (sponsored by Ashland)

On Wednesday, March 21, Tim Quast, founder and managing director of ModernIR returned to Cincinnati for a lunch meeting for our chapter members and friends. The presentation he gave is available on the chapter's Slideshare site:

ModernIR pioneered behavioral trading analytics for public companies, applying algorithmic tools to trade-executions to sort and understand the trading behaviors behind price and volume. A NIRI member since 1996, Tim is a frequent speaker and commentator on modern equity trading (his full background is available at His quotes have appeared in leading media including the Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, Financial Times of London, Reuters, Dow Jones, the Denver Post and the New York Times.

At the boot camp session, Tim will cover:

  • Three things you can always know about your trading activity
  • How your listing exchange interacts with traders and market-makers
  • What "global statistical arbitrage" is and how it relates to the US dollar and the euro
  • Why trading rules are harming buy-and-hold investment
  • What you can do in the IR chair to understand trading

This session could be a great interest to others at your firm and we encourage you to bring guests. In particular, you may want to consider extending an invitation to those among your management who often express interest in how and why your company’s stock traded in a particular fashion. Tim's explanations are accessible and would support your internal education efforts.
